Wastewater

Lack of effective wastewater treatment is a significant source of water pollution and poses a serious environmental and public health risk.

In urban areas sewage waste is collected from houses and businesses as part of municipal sewerage systems, now managed by Irish Water.  In rural areas, wastewater from individual houses is piped into a septic tank where it settles and, in effective systems, it is broken down by naturally occuring bacteria before slowly percolating into the ground.
